A message from Sau Wan after returning from the three Gorges of China and near by cities

Dear Friends

Just returned from a trip to China. It was organised by ChinaTravel. The tour included 上海 - 重慶 - 大足 - 三峽 - 武漢 - 黃山

Overall, the trip was pleasant enough though a bit rushed. It was 秀云’s first time to the Three Gorges, a place she has always wanted to visit. She wanted to have the feeling of 輕舟已過萬重山。

There was one thing that has stuck in our mind that we would like to share with you. We were told a lot of things about 貔貅 during the trip and in Shanghai we were taken to this 風水 Research Centre (right next to 宋慶玲墓地, a really solemn place, but was introduced as a place of good 風水on more than one occasion ) and were given a long lecture on 貔 貅 by the Deputy Director. The Director was away but was introduced as the person who helped to choose 蒲東 as the new site for development based on 風水 。

The followings were some of the highlights about 貔 貅:

  • it has long ancestral connection with Chinese people and culture;
  • it can do extraordinary things for us - brings fortune, protection from evil spirits etc;
  • will be the mascot of the Beijing Olympics;
  • examples of billionaires from HK having them and worshipping them;
  • one comes to Shanghai to wash the hairs of his 貔 貅 outside his business empire regularly;
  • an instance when only three passengers survived a very serious traffic accident in China (out of >20) and they all carried this thing.

We would not have been too surprised to hear all these in other places, say HK, but are still a little puzzled by hearing about all these in new China.

Just money earning tricks by tour operators in China today - entertainments for tourists? (If this is the case, then not just for overseas tourists, there were many local Chinese around as well.) Or more a reflection of China today – both the people and their ‘servants’?

We have taken lots and lots of photos!!! Kwong Yin said that we might have taken about 800 digitals!!!!!! Well, we have used up a 64 and 128 memory card each, and started on a 64 memory card.

As for pi xiu, Yau Ping said that they were given a lecture about it as well when they went to Quilin in May before they joined the reunion in HK. Friends of ours who joined a tour to China last year heard about it as well. When we checked on the Chinese Google, we found that there are actually tens of thousands of articles about it, and they are available for sale on E-Bay as well. It is all related to fengshui and superstition eventually.

It is the undisguised superstition in new china that worries us. Actually, we have a lot more to disclose if there is interest from the audience.

廣賢和秀云。
