Dear Wai Mum and Everyone,

Thank you for a very meaningful article. It cannot help but caused me to think of the factors that make Korea such a remarkable country.

Ever since I visited Korea in 1995, I realized that she is the ideal model for us, the Chinese, to follow. The people is friendly, yet very motivated, hardworking and purposeful. The patriotism is so strong, you can feel it. Yet the patriotism is not used to reject aliens; it is just a propelling force for the Koreans to move ahead. They have much less resourses then we have. Yet, look at their accomplishments!

That come to contrasting our situations. We talked about our culture, our relationship with Japan, and our relationship with our mother country and fellow compatriots. We showed a lot of sentiments and emotions. We think about our past. Remind ourselves of our glorious past, or spiritual superiosity. We argue intensely on small issues such as wether to admit new contacts, and yet still have not started to discuss how to proceed with such an issue.

One thing that still stick in my mind is the observation that in response to an issue, we start to attack ourselves: our governments (communist or nationalist). I forgot the exact sentence, (is it from one of the emails from Fung YC?) but it really impressed me a great deal.

Our personal sentiment and emotions are much stronger then our compassion for our our ethnicity (the fact that we are Chinese). We put too much energy and effort onto fighting among ourselves, rather then evaluating alternatives based on the consequences. We let our emotion block our sights.

Our government right now is doing so much for our country, and we either manage to hold onto the past (They did bad things! They did not apologize) or They are not modelled after our (past) master (British laws instead of Basic Law), or as good as our (current) lord, the democracy and freedom of United Evil Empire of America.

We want to MAKE China democratic, but is not willing to find the acceptable way to
encourage her to become so!

I think the Koreans are successful because they are focused and motivated. They are focused and motivated because they are patriotic: i.e. they realize that their common denominator is their country, their history and their culture. They are patriotic because they are self-confident. They will never think of, or never worry if otherwise, if they are second class citizens. In contrast, we still think that our system is not good, our culture is not good, our value is not good, our current situation is not good, our governements are no good, etc. While at the same time, in the past 20 years, the contributions from China to ALL humanity in the world is unprecedented
historically!

I found most laughable was when someone took it that in Hong Kong there are more and
more news reports from Chinese news agency as examples of Chinese interference to
Hong Kong.

When I was in the second year in High School, I realized that I have a cultural inferiority
complex. Over the years, I taught myself to get rid of it. Now I am comfortable about
myself. I know what I need to do. I am aware of my value. It is not important to me if
Chinese culture was once superior. I need to know what will be helpful and effective
right now. I acknowledge the bad, and think about the possibilities.

I know I am not very capable. That is not to worry me. It is what I can do with it. But I am very proud to be Chinese!

I look forward to one day, we can welcome the true spirit of Hong Kong and Taiwan to rejoin our family again!

Regards,
mky
