North America Tour Options

(prepared by Wu Tin Chee on 2011-12-01)

Option A   Canadian Rockies (about 7 days)

-Start from Calgary
-Tour the four national parks---Banff, Kootenay, Jasper, and Yoho, with emphasis on the first two parks.  Yoho is very small in area anyway as compared to the other three.
-Travel south to visit Waterton National Park on the Canadian side and the adjacent Glacier National Park on the U.S. side.

Possible side-trips (2 extra days)

-Drumheller ---visit the Tyrell Dinosaur Museum.  There is a very large display of Dinosaurs in the museum, as well as outdoor displays of excavation sites
-Peter Lougheed Provincial Park---this is a deliberately kelp a secret by the locals, hence not well-known to tourists.  It provides spectacular views of the high peaks..  Unlike other parts of the Rockies (including those within the National Parks) the high peaks are not located far away from where most tourists would stand.

-Another possibility---either before or after the tour, individuals may book a train ride through the Rockies between Calgary and Vancouver (2 days?).  Note : This should be booked individually and not as a group activity.

Option B—Canadian Rockies + Yellowstone (10 – 14 days)

-This option would be the same as Option A (but definitely without the two side-trips) plus driving down to Yellowstone and Grand Tetons.   Ten days would be rushing a bit, but probably can be done.   Taking 14 days would allow for a more leisurely trip.

Option C---Yellowstone/Grand Tetons (7-9 days)

-Start from Salt Lake City
-Drive north to Yellowstone and Grand Tetons.  Stay for about 5-6 days in that area.

-For a 9 day-trip, we can also go south and visit Arches National Park, plus a longer stay around Salt Lake City.

Option D---Yosemite. Sierra Nevada and the Death Valley (let Lum Ding fill in the details)---this one likely will take 7 days

Option E---the 12 to 14-day tour of Colorado and Yellowstone as proposed previously as “Rocky Mountain Tour V.1) , but tour may start in Denver as originally proposed, or from Salt Lake City.
