Horse and female rider in Tang Dynasty (618-907)

This figure is baked with clay with pigments, silk and linen.

The horse and rider is from the tomb of a member of the Zhang family in Turfan. The fashion and dress and of riding piebald horses originated in Turfan.

According to Jiutangshu, court ladies wore a weimao 𮳱cU, or a full length veil, when they went out they wore a hat with a "skirt" going down to the neck.

The custom of wearing veils was introduced from the west and was adopted for reasons of modesty, or purely a matter of fashion.

As worn by this figure from Turfan, the veil has a more practical reason, that of protecting the wearer from the desert sands.
